Vertex was founded in 1989 and went public in 1991. In 1999, our collaborator GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) launched the first Vertex drug, the HIV protease inhibitor Agenerase (amprenavir). Together with GSK, we subsequently developed a second HIV protease inhibitor, Lexiva (fosamprenavir; marketed outside the U.S. as Telzir). We now have a pipeline of drug candidates targeting infectious disease, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory disease, and cancer. One of our most advanced drugs in development is the oral hepatitis C protease inhibitor telaprevir (VX-950). Vertex now employs more than 1000 people across our major research sites in San Diego, CA, Oxford, U.K. and our headquarters in Cambridge, MA.

We aim to commercialize breakthrough drugs independently and in collaboration with other companies. Our best known collaborations are with major companies, such as Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, and Johnson & Johnson. But we actually have more than 500 collaborations in place with companies and institutions around the world to tap into scientific and clinical excellence. We think of Vertex as a company that is networked to leverage the power of innovation—with the goal of maximizing the clinical and commercial potential of innovative new drugs.
